Gaines Family Will Hold Memorial To Honor Slain Teen

Event will take place at noon tomorrow in Orange Park.

The family of Derrick Gaines plans to hold a memorial tomorrow at noon in Orange Park to honor the memory of the 15-year-old boy shot to death by a South San Francisco Police officer, said his aunt Dolores Piper.

The event in the park located at Orange Avenue and Tennis Drive is being organized by Gaines' mother Rachel Guido, to remember her son who was shot and killed by an unnamed police officer at the Arco gas station on Westborough and Gellert boulevards on June 5.

An investigation into what transpired leading up to the boy's death is still underway, but recently an attorney hired by the Gaines family said that witness testimony contradicts claims made by police that the victim attempted to pull out a gun before he was killed.

The life of the young boy has been remembered at a vigil where he was shot, and his death has been a focus of rallies detesting officer-related shootings across the Bay Area.
