Do You Know Where Your Tsunami Evacuation Site Is?

San Mateo County's Annual Disaster Preparedness Day provides residents some important reminders this Saturday.

The ninth annual San Mateo County Annual Disaster Preparation Day will be held this Saturday, June 8, on Opening Day of the San Mateo County Fair. The event reminds the county's residents and business owners of the need for preparation, and to provide them with many of the tools to protect their family, home, and business in case of disaster.

“This event is also where coastal families can get more information about tsunamis,” said Steve Mahaley, San Mateo County's Office of Emergency Services (OES) coordinator, “and determine if their neighborhood is in a potential tsunami inundation zone.”

Most of the Coast, said Mahaley, is above the 40 foot line on bluffs and not in the inundation zone but Linda Mar and Beach Boulevard in Pacifica and the Princeton and Miramar area and parts of Half Moon Bay are and would be evacuated in the event of a tsunami warning. Information on evacuation sites can be found here.

Also during the Disaster Preparedness event, attendees will learn how to prepare their family for a disaster, take a free and quick course in basic CPR, learn how to put together a disaster kit and make a disaster plan, see first responders in action, and more.

San Mateo County Annual Disaster Preparedness Day takes place June 8 from 10 am - 2 p.m. at the San Mateo County Event Center, 1346 Saratoga Ave. in San Mateo.

Arrive before 11 a.m. and get free parking and free admission for the whole family to the San Mateo County Fair.
