The San Mateo Coast Natural History Association has changed its name to the Coastside State Parks Association (CSPA) to reflect the expanded scope of its programs for local parks.
With the continued budget cuts from the state, the organization has stepped in to support activities well beyond its traditional role of funding interpretive and educational programs.
“Our new name better reflects our commitment to the parks,” said Joyce Pennell, president of CSPA. "Our association is dedicated to expanding programs and access to these wonderful resources for all visitors.”
Coastside State Parks Association recently provided funding for:
- a Historic Structures Report, the first step in restoring Pigeon Point Light Station
- keeping Gray Whale Cove State Beach from closure
- completing installation of the foot bridge that opened Pescadero Marsh to visitors, including more than 10,000 school children each year
“The San Mateo coast is one of the greatest resources for residents in the Bay Area and for visitors from all parts of California, the U.S. and the world," said Pennell. "We are fortunate to have 15 state parks within a short drive of major population centers with such a diverse range of attractions."
The Coastside State Parks Association, established in 1990, is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit that supports 15 state parks on the San Mateo County coast, between Gray Whale Cove and Año Nuevo. Membership in CSPA is open to all and members are treated to special behind-the-scenes tours and activities, discounts, and news about the coast. Opportunities are also available for qualified individuals to join the CSPA Board of Directors.
