The Sutter Care at Home Children’s Grief Support Program provides youth and families the time and space to share their experiences of grief and loss in a safe and supportive environment. Recognizing that children tend to experience their grief through play and creative expression, Sutter Care at Home has created a program, based on The Dougy Center model (www.dougy.org) that allows for this kind of expression in a group environment. Our goal is for children to not feel so alone in their grief.

The groups run for 1-1/2 hours, twice monthly, and run concurrently with an adult group, providing support for the caregivers who accompany the children or teens.

Individual Counseling. For those who need additional support, we offer individual counseling for

children and adults, either in their home or our office. Play therapies and expressive arts therapies may be utilized in conjunction with talk therapy.

Family Counseling. When one person in a family dies, his or her death leaves the family with roles that will be forever changed. Figuring out new roles and a “new normal” for children and adults can be difficult and confusing. Family counseling offers a way for each member of the family to be heard and understood by a trained counselor who can help facilitate new changes and emotions.

Our grief support services are available to anyone in the greater San Mateo area. We do not charge for our services but a sliding-scale donation may be requested. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay.
