Mavericks Surfing Contest Permit Approved—For a Price

The permit fee will be $30,000 for Jeff Clark and leaders of Mavericks Invitational Inc. to run world-famous surfing contest at break just outside Half Moon Bay.

Inc. won approval from the San Mateo County Harbor Commission Wednesday night for its bid to run the 2011-12 Mavericks surfing contest.

The company is led by Jay Clark, a Half Moon Bay veteran big-wave surfer, and four other members of its board of directors representing the business, surfing and local resident communities.

Despite the good news of getting the contest permit—the "golden ticket," as Ken Collins, a Santa Cruz professional big-wave surfer and Mavericks Invitational board member, put it—the 's unexpected move to raise the cost of the permit by $10,000 was a sticking point. The permit fee will be $3,000.
