"I am just amazed and delighted," said Erin Tormey, Coastside Farmer's Market founder and coordinator. "To be in the top five with that group is remarkable in itself, but to enjoy the kind of customer loyalty and support that put a small, locally focused, community oriented certified farmer's market like ours in this position is just plain thrilling."

The Kensington Farmer's Market came in third place, while San Francisco's Alemany Farmer's Market came in fourth. Fifth place was awarded to the Berkeley Farmer's Market operated by The Ecology Center.

"Ferry Plaza is world-famous, with a long standing reputation for excellence, and the Alemany, Kensington and Berkeley certified markets are some of the best in the business," she said.

After establishing the Half Moon Bay market, Tormey founded — and continues to coordinate — another , held every Wednesday afternoon between May and December in Rockaway Beach.

According to Tormey, the farmer's markets in Half Moon Bay and Pacifica have the highest percentage of in-county growers and ranchers of any certified farmer's market in the region.

"I think that makes a huge difference in how our patrons feel about 'their' market, and how committed they are to the success and durabilty of their farming, fishing and ranching community," she said.

The 2012 season for the Half Moon Bay Coastside Farmer's Market opens on Saturday, May 5 (9 a.m. — 1 p.m.), while the Pacifica market opens on Wednesday, May 2 (2:30 p.m. — 6:30 p.m.) with Don Horsley scheduled to ring the opening bell.
