Barolo Restaurant Shuts Down; T&E Pastorino's is Going Out of Business

Nobody likes to see a local business go down. Here are two popular places — one in Pacifica, the other in Half Moon Bay — that will no longer be in business.

Sprouts and Shutters brings you the latest on which businesses are shuttering —and which are sprouting — around Half Moon Bay and Pacifica. In this installation of Sprouts and Shutters, Patch has some sad news about two local businesses that are closing their doors for good.

CLOSED: Barolo, 404 San Pedro Ave., Pacifica

Many will agree that Barolo was the best option for reasonably priced, tasty Italian fare in Pacifica. The lovely Pedro Point restaurant sadly closed their doors permanently Jan. 5. Last weekend, Barolo had a going-out-of-business sale, selling all its china, glassware, pictures, chairs, tables, and much more.

“We enjoyed serving the Pedro Point neighborhood, Pacifica and the surrounding area for the past six and a half years, however, we have not been able to come to a resolution about our lease at Barolo,” wrote hosts Gary, Shawn and Chef Jason on the Barolo Facebook page.

Luckily, patrons craving good Italian food can visit their sister restaurant Moonraker in Rockaway Beach, where they will honor Barolo gift certificates until July 1, 2013, and continue to offer the great food and service known at Barolo. Soon the Moonraker menu will feature some of the Barolo favorites. Stay tuned.

Still, comments on their Facebook page show that many are not happy about the closing. Pacificans held quite an affinity for Barolo. It had a beautiful ambiance and was the go-to restaurant for many families, romantic dates and events. Here's what some had to say on Facebook about the closing:

Kathy Graham-Snyder: So sad to hear that news, we had many good times and family celebrations at Barolo

Gina Arnest: Please tell me you are not closing down Barolo??!! :(((

Almira Sugatan Coronado: Nooooo!

Angela Pacheco: Worst News EVER!!!

Anna Ramos-Pacheco: Say it aint so!!

Lianne McLean: Too bad about Barolo. Sorry to see it go.

Janeen Marquardt: Sorry to hear this...

John Christian Lysdahl: I am stunned and deeply saddened. So many good times, so many good meals, so many fond memories. Trust me when I say your restaurant will be sorely missed.

Melissa Macarai: I had one of my best dates there with my boyfriend. Amazing food! Looking forward to trying Moonraker out in Rockaway Beach.

Morgan Sherwood: This sucks. Barolo was our favorite neighborhood restaurant.

Karen Muhlin: Very sad to hear that. We had our wedding reception at Barolo this past June and were looking forward to spending many anniversaries celebrating there. Hope Moonraker lives up to the expectations that Barolo has set.

Susan Harman: Booooo. Barolo was my favorite restaurant. Not just my favorite Pacifica restaurant, but my absolute favorite.

CLOSING: T&E Pastorino's Tutti Fiori, 12511 San Mateo Road, Highway 92, Half Moon Bay

T&E Pastorino's Tutti Fiori is closing. Their last day with doors open will be Jan. 30. They are offering up to 40 to 60 percent off of everything in their greenhouse gift shop, and it all needs to go.

Inventory includes No. 1 grade rose plants and high-end gifts. “We’ve also got lots of Christmas and fall decorations, pottery, and home décor items — a scattering of different nice things,” said Patty Pastorino.

Bob Fuller on the Pastorino's Tutti Fiori's Facebook page says, “I want their birdhouses.” He better get over there quick because things are going fast with only 12 more days till closing. They will be open everyday except Mondays through Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

So why is this quaint roadside plant, fresh cut flowers, organic produce, and housewares store shutting its doors for good? “It’s time to move on with the economy against us, so much work and not much reward, we need to close,” said Pastorino.

Many are sad to see T&E Pastorino's Tutti Fiori go. Here are some comments from their Facebook page about the closing:

Charise Hale McHugh: I'm so sorry. I thought it was so fun.

Danette Pugliese: Sorry to hear the news. Retail is NOT easy in this economy!

Dina M. Izzo: I am truly sorry to hear this.

Lyn Muth: Oh, no! Sorry to hear this, but understand how these things go.

Karen Louise: NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mrskbg Gunar: Sad news, beautiful gift will be missed... thanks for the fun while it lasted!

Taxi Shirley: You'll be missed.

What will you miss the most at Barolo or T&E Pastorino's Tutti Fiori? Tell us in the comments.

I can start with the comments on the Theravance drug, fluticasone fluroate - the active moiety inRead More this compound is the same, fluticasone (proprionate) that has been marketed by GSK for the same indication for approximately 25 years. Indeed, that patent is so old, and the drug has such a proven track record for safety and efficacy, that the patent has expired and there are generic versions available. There is also in implicit assumption by the author that the only reason that the FDA will approve medications in a short time span is because they are for 'life-or-limb' or unmet serious medical need. This is just not the case - regulators in many countries, including the FDA in the USA, may give accelerated approval to a product, where the safety and tolerability of a product is equivalent to a similar active agent which has already been approved. I suspect this is the case for fluticasone fluroate - but I am not privy to the details of the regulatory filing. I note that none of the companies mentioned here, nor the FDA, has provided input to this article. The journalism in this article smacks of someone trying to make a name for themselves quickly by scaring uneducated and/or anxious people. The science is just plain flawed.

I think many of us can relate! 10 kids, huh? I was the oldest of 9, so sort of understand. MyRead More family grew up in Pacifica, & we rode over the slide every weekend when we went to the HMB airport to tend to my father's airplanes. I drove on it once, during driver's ed in high school, scary! I have an old home movie clip from 1966, going over the slide. Very overexposed, but you can still see parts of the slide in it. More recently, took 2 videos of our drive over the slide, North & south views. Going North: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb8NKnu9Gvw Going South: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rlN_g2LeE8
