UPDATE: Suspicious Device at SFO Deemed Harmless; Flights Delayed

A checkpoint was closed while the bomb squad investigated.

Update 3:55p.m.

A suspicious device spotted in a bag at a San Francisco International Airport security checkpoint has been declared harmless, and the checkpoint has reopened, according to airport officials.

The device was spotted by a Transportation Security Agency screener at 11:17 a.m. at a security checkpoint in Terminal 1 at Boarding Area C, airport spokesman Mike McCarron said.

Police and TSA officials called in the San Francisco Police Department's bomb squad to investigate the device, shutting down the checkpoint and surrounding areas during the investigation.

The device was found to be harmless shortly before 1:30 p.m. and the checkpoint was reopened, McCarron said.

A bus bridge was established during the closure to transfer arriving passengers around the closed checkpoint.

Around eight to 10 Delta Airlines flights will be delayed because of the incident, affecting approximately 1,200 departing passengers. The airline hopes to be back on schedule by 6 p.m., McCarron said.

Update, 1:44p.m.

The all-clear signal has been given by a bomb squad that investigated a suspicious package reported at a San Francisco International Airport security checkpoint today, an airport spokesman said.

The all-clear was given around 1:20 p.m. following the report of the suspicious package, which shut down Boarding Area C in Terminal 1 of the airport at about 11:30 a.m., spokesman Mike McCarron said.

One person has been interviewed in connection with the package, but McCarron said he did not know if they were in custody.

He said more information was not yet available, but that airport officials are holding a news conference at 2 p.m. today to discuss the incident.

Update, 12:56p.m.

The bomb squad is on scene this afternoon at San Francisco International Airport, where a suspicious package was found at a Terminal 1 security checkpoint, according to an airport spokesman.

The checkpoint at Boarding Area C in Terminal 1 has been shut down for the investigation of the package, which was spotted around 11:30 a.m., airport spokesman Mike McCarron said.

The bomb squad was still getting set up as of about 12:45 p.m. and it is unclear when the checkpoint will reopen, he said.

One person has been interviewed in connection with the package, but McCarron said he did not know if they were in custody.

McCarron said airport officials plan on holding a news conference at 2 p.m. today to discuss the incident.
