Cloudy Skies Spell Flight Delays at SFO

Flights delayed by an average of 45 minutes.

Low clouds and fog draping parts of the Bay Area are causing flight delays at San Francisco International Airport, an airport duty manager said.

The airport initiated the weather-related ground delay program at 8 a.m., and as of 11:45 a.m. arriving flights were delayed by an average of 45 minutes, duty manager Doug Yakel said.

Departing flights are also affected, but the delays vary from airline to airline. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines before heading to the airport today.

The ground delay program is expected to remain in effect through midnight, but Yakel said there is a chance that flights could get back on track sooner.

"Already we're seeing signs of the skies clearing a bit," he said. "We're hopeful that (the fog) will burn off earlier and that schedules will get back on time."
