Coastside Artist Challenges Notions About Batik
Diane Burns dips her paintbrush into wax, rather than paint, to create intricate artwork.
The thought of batik typically conjures-up geometric images on cotton material, sewn into boho-style clothing.
But local artist Diane Burns paints intricate designs using wax and dyes, elevating batik from a craft or folk art into fine art.
Burns has turned her eye toward buildings and landscapes, but her favorite subject is birds and animals.

Burns was drawn to batik because of its challenge. "Since batik is a method of painting 'negative space' I have learned to see the shapes and figures in between shapes and figures," Burns said in a prepared statement. "This, I believe, not only develops a strong design sense but is helpful when navigating around a piece of silk, deciding where to apply the next color and then the next application of wax."
Her batik will go on display at The Coastside Fine Art Gallery in Half Moon Bay this Friday. Burns will give an informal talk during an artist reception Saturday, at 5:30. The reception will be held 5-7 p.m. You may view her art through Sept. 3.
