Sand Castle Contest Returns to Fog Fest

In its 28th year, the annual Fog Fest celebration will have the popular castle and sculpture contest once again.

The 2013 Pacific Coast Fog Fest announced Monday that the annual Sand Castle and Sculpture Contest will return to Fog Fest this year.

"We canceled it last year but are bringing it back this year as Victor Spano of the Economic Development Committee has come on board and agreed to handle contests," said Carol Camacho with the Fog Fest Organizing Group and the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce.

The Sand Castle and Sculpture Contest is a chance for local businesses, families, groups or organizations to use their creativity, have fun, and build the sandcastle of their dreams during the Pacific Coast Fog Fest. No experience is necessary and amateur teams are welcome.

In 2011, the last year the event was held, Fog Fest Board Member and Publicity Chair Sam Casillas was the Sand Castle and Sand Sculpture Contest Coordinator who oversaw the day’s sculpting and explained that prior to the annual contest, the Fog Fest used to hire a professional sand sculpture artist to create a unique piece of art. Though beautiful, the sculpture didn’t involve festival-goers the way the contest does today.

The theme of this year’s Fog Fest is surfing, and entries are encouraged to celebrate that theme, however, any theme is possible.

Teams consisting of individuals, or groups up to four persons, can compete for an entry fee of only $25. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entrants and announced on Sunday at Fog Fest. The panelists of judges will include members from the Fog Fest Organizing Group and the Sanchez Art Center. The number of entries will be limited, so sign up quickly. Areas to be judged upon:

• Originality/creativity

• Attention to detail

• Artistic impression

Public voting can be done for a $1 donation per one favorite entry.

Anyone interested in entering must preregister in advance by Sept. 1. Entry forms are downloadable on the Fog Fest website, www.pacificcoastfogfest.com
