While many families expect to pack on the pounds during the holidays, the Murphys of Pacifica are busy getting into shape.
The Murphy family was selected from more than 200 families throughout the U.S. as a semi-finalist in Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s (BGCA) 3rd Annual Triple Play Fit Family Challenge. They move one step closer to being selected as a finalist family and receiving an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles, Calif. to meet three-time Olympic Medalist (Track & Field) Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
The Murphy family was selected as a semi-finalist for their commitment to improving their diet, increasing their daily physical activity and by spending more quality time together as a family. Mike and Shelli Murphy have two sons, Joseph, 9, and James, 5, who attend the Boys & Girls Club Pacifica Clubhouse and participate in Triple Play at the Club.
As one of 10 Fit Family Challenge semi-finalists the Murphys will take their commitment to healthy living to the next level. To advance to the finals, the Murphy family will be required to further their improvements by increasing the frequency and intensity of their exercise, substituting and incorporating healthy food choices into their meals and spending more family time together through various activities.
The Fit Family Challenge finalists will be announced Friday, Dec. 21. Jackie Joyner-Kersee will join BGCA staff and representatives from Triple Play sponsors – Coca-Cola and the WellPoint Foundation on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 in Los Angeles, Calif. to select the winning family at the Fit Family Challenge finale.
The winning family will receive an all-expense paid family vacation to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as gift baskets with prizes to help them continue in their fitness goals.
“We applaud the efforts of our participating families and Club members who are demonstrating their commitment to fitness, nutrition and spending quality time together,” said Wayne B. Moss, BGCA’s Senior Director, Healthy Lifestyles. “Boys & Girls Clubs of America views childhood obesity as one of the most challenging obstacles facing youth today, so the Triple Play Fit Family Challenge is a wonderfully collaborative way for families to make healthy living a part of their daily routines.”
