PatchClips: One Person's Junk Is Another Person's Treasure at the PHS Rummage Sale

After seven years of running the monthly Rummage Sale, the Pacifica Historical Society has raised $100,000, but they still need a lot more to restore the Little Brown Church.

An accordion. A flat screen TV. A waffle maker, ski boots and a large Chinese vase were just a few of the many donated treasures for sale at the Pacifica Historical Society’s Winter Wonderland Rummage Sale Friday at the Little Brown Church on Francisco Boulevard.

It’s donations like this that has really helped the folks at the Pacifica Historical Society get just a little bit closer to restoring the 90-year-old Little Brown Church into the Pacifica Museum Center, which when done will feature meeting space, archive storage and exhibit space showcasing Pacifica’s history.

To date the project’s restoration committee has raised $350,000 over a 10-year period with more than $100,000 of that raised from the Rummage Sale in seven years, said Pacifica Historical Society treasurer Jerry Crow.

Still, the restoration will be expensive, and “we need another $100,000 for the project,” he said.

Shirlee Gibbs, director of the Pacifica Historical Society, is also the chair for the Rummage Sale and has been on the restoration committee for seven years. In those years, she has seen the Rummage Sale grow, from its early days in Linda Mar to today inside the Little Brown Church.

"We have been unable to secure any historic preservation grant money so the monthly Rummage Sale is one of our biggest fundraisers," she said. “We will keep doing the Rummage Sale until we can complete the restoration and open the doors."

The Rummage Sale is the second Friday and Saturday of every month. All donations for the Little Brown Church are used to fund the Pacifica Historical Society’s project to restore the building and create a community museum within it.

“There are many wonderful and interesting things here for sale,” said Kathleen Manning, president of the Pacifica Historical Society. “And if you don’t find something, clear out your old stuff and bring it here. We’ll take care it.”

In fact, volunteer Michael Guillen will deliver and pick-up heavier items to and from your home.

The Rummage Sale is open again Saturday, Jan. 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with everything 50 percent off from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Little Brown Church, 1850 Francisco Blvd., Pacifica.
