Memorial Day Mass to be Celebrated at Our Lady of the Pillar Cemetery

'Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes' will be held in Half Moon Bay on Monday.

Salute members of the military killed in combat during a Memorial Day ceremony at Our Lady of the Pillar Cemetery in Half Moon Bay. 

The event is part of "Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes," a national celebration developed by the Catholic Cemetery Conference to recognize men and women who died while serving in the armed service. Active members of the military and veterans will also be honored.

The event in Half Moon Bay begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

“We are pleased to be participating in this heartfelt program and are glad to have the opportunity to give thanks to the military members and veterans within our community for their commitment and service," Monica Williams, Director of Cemeteries for the Archdiocese, said in a prepared statement. “We are inspired by these individuals."

There also will be Memorial Day services Monday at: 

  • Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma at 11 a.m.
  • Mt. Olivet Cemetery in San Rafael at 11 a.m.
  • Holy Cross Cemetery in Menlo Park at 11 a.m.
In Colma, Rev. Msgr. James Tarantino, Vicar General for the Archdiocese of San Francisco, will celebrate Mass at Holy Cross Mausoleum. There also will be a presentation of the colors by members of the Cesar E. Chavez American Legion Post 505 and the opportunity for cemetery visitors to remember loved ones by writing messages on tribute cards. Before the event, members of the South San Francisco Girl Scout Troop #30348 will place American flags at the gravesites in the military section of the cemetery.
