A high surf advisory is currently in effect through Wednesday morning along the Bay Area coast, according to the National Weather Service.
Swells are expected to increase this afternoon with seas of 9 to 12 feet, lowering slightly this evening and then building again becoming very steep Tuesday afternoon and evening. Breakers could reach up to 12 feet, according to the report and seas will initially be dominated by a 14 second northwest swell.
Recreational boaters should remain in port, advises the National Weather Service report, or take shelter until waves subside. Commercial vessels should prepare for rough seas.
Gale force gusts of 20 to 30 knots are expected tonight through Tuesday as well.
Weather officials advise there may be strong rip currents and sneaker waves at local beaches.
