Engineers Continue to Work on Coastside Tsunami Sirens

The tsunami siren test was cancelled today. The entire tsunami notification system is projected to be in operation within the next few days.

The test of the coastal tsunami sirens scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday was canceled due to engineering work still being done on the system.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services is currently involved in a project to upgrade their tsunami notification system. A major part of this upgrade involves the eight sirens.

Engineers are working on the system today and the entire system is projected to be in operation within the next few days.

Crews started preparing the eight sirens between Pacifica and Pescadero for replacement mid-August. During a routine test of the tsunami warning system in August, only three of the eight sirens along 30 miles of coastline between Pacifica and Pescadero were found to be functioning properly.

During this project the County of San Mateo has prepared plans to move additional police and fire resources to the coastside if a tsunami warning were to be issued.
