Do You Know How Many Fruits and Vegetables You Need Each Day?

The San Mateo County Health System shares this handy calculator from the Center for Disease Control for a recommendation based on your stats.

It’s true, and we all know it: study after study shows that almost everyone needs to eat more fruits and vegetables. But how much more? A growing body of research shows that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health, but every body is different.

With this in mind, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has this handy little calculator that calculates how many fruits and vegetables you need each day.

Just enter your age, sex and level of physical activity into the calculator here to find the amount that’s right for you. It will tell you how many calories your results are based upon per day calorie requirements. Your age, sex, and activity level determine how many calories you need each day, and your calorie needs determine how many fruits and vegetables you should eat.

Compared to people who eat only small amounts of fruits and vegetables, those who eat more generous amounts—as part of a healthy diet—are likely to have reduced risk of chronic diseases, according to the CDC. These diseases include stroke, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and perhaps heart disease.
