VIDEO: Pacifica Picks It Up For Earth Day

Hundreds of volunteers spread out in town to pick up trash and then gathered at the beach for a celebration.

Hundreds of people from around the region gathered in town to celebrate Earth Day (which is actually on April 22) with the Pacifica Beach Coalition.

They started early this morning by picking up trash in open spaces and streets and then descended on Pacifica State Beach's south parking lot for a celebration complete with barbecue from the Pacifica Lions, music by local groups including Pollo Del Mar and fun activites for kids and adults alike, such as Pacifica Patch's Knock Down Litter bowling game and flotsam sculpture-building from the Sanchez Art Center.

Pacifica State Beach and the walkway leading to the Pedro Point Shopping Center plus its parking lot were spotless after the celebration. A far cry from their usual littered state. Whether you'd consider yourself an environmentalist or not, it's hard to beat a trash-free beach.

It's amazing what a community can do in just a few hours during which it comes together.

Lynn Adams, president of the Pacifica Beach Coalition, marked today's event as a huge success.

Look for numbers--such as attendees and the tonnage of trash collected--on Pacifica Patch soon. In the meantime, check out the video and photos of the event in the gallery to the right.

Great turnout today and the event looked to have expanded a bit from last year -- good to see.

Pollo Del Mar was a very entertaining band (awesome Frank Zappa cover song they did) and it was nice to see you again, Camden.

The video is great! Thanks again for all your Pacifica coverage -- the community benefits from your efforts.

Excellent video coverage, sights and sounds of good citizens doing their part to protect and preserve the beautiful area in which they live. The video really displays how these people value and appreciate Pacfifica. They are also great role models of integrity for their children - giving with their time, showing up to do something purely good in a very weary world. Patch.com - Camden -thank you!
